Human Relationship (மனித உறவு)

Inter personnel Relationship ( சக ஊழியரிடம் பழுகுதல்) and

Emotional Intelligence.

If one is incapable of working in a team or live in harmony with society in general, though highly learned, is as bad as an illiterate ignorant person. Some people are highly educated, come out with high qualifications in academics. However, they lack team spirit and are incapable of working in a group. As any task needs the cooperative efforts of many interacting individuals, these people will not be productive and in fact be the cause of disenchantment among the subordinates, peers and the boss. A man who is incapable to be good team member can never become a team leader too. They are as bad as totally ignorant person in terms of their performance as their output would also turn out to be nil. Assessment of EI ( Emotional Intelligence )  of employees in performance rating have gained currency in recent times.

though highly learned, are as good as ignorant only.

Anger Management (சின  கட்டுபாடு)

Self Destruction ( சுய அழிவு

Just to save himself at least, one must control anger failing which his anger itself will destroy him. In the course of work, all are confronted with many issues, landing them in situations provoking them to lose their temper. However, It is of paramount importance for everyone to exercise control on his emotions and act with calm and composure. Any hasty act on account of anger can land one in deep trouble and cause irreparable damage to his reputation.

Anger distracts an individual from the main issue. It is termed as temporary madness and decision taken in a fit of anger always turns out to be wrong. Anger in fact, is nothing but manifestation of one’s weakness and of helplessness. One loses his control on his words and acts. His abusive words and violent actions reduce him into an object of ridicule among his colleagues and friends, could also trigger permanent enmity. Gradually he gets isolated from the society as well.

Venting of anger spoils team spirit and demotivates team mates spoiling the healthy ambiance of work place and destroys the motivation of his peers to work with him.

The top management, while evaluating the suitability of a person for higher position, assigns high weightage for maturity and restraint in dealing with highly tricky volatile issues. No boss would like to take a risk of offering a responsible post to a highly volatile person with explosive anger as uncontrolled anger during times of crisis affects decision making. His anger could become a big stumbling block in career advance and sometimes be the cause for one to get fired from the employment itself.

Anger had been found to be the cause of many life threatening diseases like heart attack, blood pressure, nervous break down and mental health in general . Control of anger is a great asset in fostering healthy Inter Personal Relationship. Roger Federer the greatest tennis star and a living legend, during beginning of his career had uncontrollable temper during his formative years and his coach trained him to convert  his negative energy anger to positive energy as focus on the game and rest as we all know is history. He excels in most critical circumstances and never allows anger to affect his concentration. Hence, one must totally desist from anger, which otherwise will destroy him totally. To command respect of his colleagues, subordinates and superiors one has to establish pleasant relationship even under critical circumstances.

Thannaiye Kollum Sinam

To save himself atleast, one must guard against anger;
if not, his  anger itself will destroy him.

Ill  Effects of anger

This ‘Kural’  highlights the adverse effect of anger during interaction with superiros and subordinates. If one vents out his anger towards his superiors it will have no effect on his boss, while he is sure to get destroyed in  his career completely. At the same time, if one gets angry with his subordinates, not only it will affect them, it will spoil his good name affecting his good relationship forever. He will loose all cooperation of his mates and can no longer command the respect making his position untenable. Some are good servants (very obedient to the superiors) but bad masters (ill treatment of subordinates). The message here is anger towards anyone is equally destructive.

Getting angry with superiors (more powerful) is bad; however nothing could be worse than anger towards vulnerable people liable to get affected.

Anger Strategy (சின  வியூகம்)

Wise men do not exhibit their anger openly when they get hurt by enemy. They keep it in mind and wait for the best opportunity to win over.  The strength of a person is strategy in tackling his adversary. This is very true in corporate politics and need for a long term strategy to beat rivals. In fact, an appearance of matured nonchalance would be very effective as it would throw the rival off guard and leave him guessing about his rival’s further course of action to be taken. Further, it exemplifies the strength of character and superiority over his rival. On the other hand, instant reaction could become wrong or ineffective as no time is available for carefully analyzing the pros and cons of the action.

There is a saying in English that no one should attempt to “win the battle and loose the war”. The  couplet below conveys the same meaning in a positive fashion.

Investment Decision (முதலீடு செய்ய முடிவெடுத்தல்)

 Cost Benefit Analysis ( செலவு பயன் பகுப்பாய்வு )

This has connotation in many ares of management like conceptual Planning, expansion, Risk analysis under uncertainty, and Return on investment in the long run . The ‘ Kural’ itself is so concise and self explanatory and can be expanded to any length.

Risk of loss, possible gain, and long term return on investment
Should be considered before embarking upon any action.
Risky Investment (ஆபத்தான முதலீடு)

Maximum caution must be exercised before taking any new investment decision. There are many instances where in, huge high risk investment is made in a hurry, coveting  attractive return, driven by greed, leading to total loss of  evan the invested capital . Here, the sage warns against such misadventure and cautions against taking undue, unwarranted  risks. In short the sage warns against irrational exuberance during decision making.

Treasury Management (நிதி நிர்வாகம்)

Revenue (வருவாய்)

The Chief of an organization has to constantly enlarge source of income and  improve the wealth. At the same time, he should also overcome possible hurdles that might crop up in new ventures.  This is most relevant in the current context, where each company had to face intense competition and unless otherwise constant attempt is made to innovate to enhance the revenue, even a well established organization can face dangers threatening ir mere existence.

The leader must have the capability to enlarge the sources (of revenue), increase wealth and  with indepth analysis prevent  accidents (which would destroy it).

This ‘Kural’ is extension of the earlier one, wherein it covers the whole gamut of the responsibility of the CEO with respect to Finance. The sage elaborates  vital four vital functions that contributes to keep intact the financial health of the organization.

Iyatralum Yeetalum Kaaththalum Kaatha
Vakuththalum Vallath Tharasu.

Opening up new avenues for earning revenue, Ensure regular earning, conserve the earned income, and proper allocation of resources are the prime responsibility of the chief executive.

Cost Control ( செலவின கட்டுப்பாடு)

In any business, there can always be fluctuations in the income. Same is the case for expenditure too. Hence, in order to maintain  the financial health, the CEO must constantly monitor and review the income and expenditure and ensure that there is no cost overrun. A Project Director has to maintain the expenditure well within the stipulated budget. Many projects become unviable because of cost overrun.

Even the most powerful and highly developed rich nation is burdened with heavy borrowing from other countries and it has become the biggest issue confronting many governments. The real estate bubble triggering the economic downturn in USA is a case in point where banks had not bothered to check the credit worthiness of the borrowers before sanctioning huge loan resulting in default by borrowers to the extent of closure of many banks. Companies involved in hedging huge amounts with out proper security back up run the risk of incurring heavy loss. Hence economic health must be constantly monitored and the management must resist the temptation to over reach than their capacity.

 Pogaru Agalak Kadai

while limited income may not be bad, expense beyond income
(cost overrun) should  never be allowed.

cost overrun - (மித மிஞ்சிய  செலவு)

This is a great lesson in treasury management. The CEO has to guard against over zealous attitude to indulge in uncontrolled expenditure, way beyond the revenue. It may be investment, new expansion or even measures towards employee welfare. Whatever be the reason, the chief should always ensure that the commitment towards expenditure is done taking into account the income. The recent economic crisis throughout the world is the reflection of individuals, companies and even Governments living beyond their means landing the whole world in deep depression. One should not get carried away by irrational exuberance and fall a pray to greed.

The wealth of an individual, who indulges in expenditure without
taking account of his income is sure to vanish away, though it

  may appear to be intact.

COMMUNICATION (தகவல் தொடர்பு)

Impact of Harsh words

The most important lesson to be learnt and strictly followed by all levels of executives at all times is to avoid even a single harsh word in any circumstance. Any unparliamentary words uttered in a fit of anger or intended sarcasm hurt the affected and create enmity that may affect the relationship for life.Great friendship gets destroyed on account of indiscretion in speech. In business environment, diplomacy is of paramount importance, as stakes are very high and every word is scrutinized and remembered for ever. No good businessman would utter wounding words even under deliberate provocation. It is a fantastic analogy by the sage brought out in the following Kural..

Theeyinaar Sutta Pun Ullaarum Aaraathe
Naavinaar Sutta Vadu.

Even an wound caused by fire will heal over a period of time
while the scar caused by offending words will never disappear.

Negotiation skill (பேச்சுவார்த்தை திறன்)

Though the Kural given below address ambassador or minister of a king, the advice is very much relevant even now for every one engaged in any type of business. There is a constant demand for interaction within and outside the company by everyone from top to bottom. Persons working in marketing, sales, purchase, contract management, legal and personnel departments  to name a few have to interact with other company officials, Customers, contractors or Government agency day in and day out. There is also a need for interaction between labour and management on many important issues.

Hence, this advice holds good for one and all at all times. No one likes a long winded speech, harsh words, sarcasm or criticism. On the other hand, one can win the heart with a tinge of humour which can be a great relief in  tense situation. The following couplet highlights this message.

Thogachcholli Thoovaatha Neekki Nagachcholli
Nandri Payappatham Thoothu.

With brivity in  speech, avoiding harsh words, interlaced  with
humour, bringing the best outcome is  the virtue of an ambassador..

Effective Speaking and good Listening
Intellectuals convey in simple terms even complicated things so as to enable listeners to understand the subject. They also grasp subtle meanings and nuances couched in the words of others through focussed listening.

One must have mastery over the subject, to be able to convey it in simple terms. It should help listeners to comprehend what they hear with ease. People who do not have firm grip on the subject get confused and confuse others also with their talk. Same individual by his or her focused and concentrated listening, understand subtle messages couched in other’s talk immediately. To accomplish this, one has to be a good listener too.

In this ‘kural”, the Sage lays down basic rules to get best out of any meeting or conversation. He exhorts one to convey ides in simple words and listen carefully to get a firm grip on the message ingrained in other’s talk. Bombastic words and complicated sentences though may look impressive will not serve the purpose as people instead of getting the message, tend to loose track, when they listen to confused and complicated speech. This is very important for all executives involved in many important meetings like contract negotiation, Discussions with customers, fellow executives, union leaders etc. Most successful managers either inherently possess or cultivate the above trait.

 Enpporulavaagach Selach Chollithaan Pirarvaai

Nunporul Kaanpa Tharivu

Brilliance is to express even profound thoughts in simple term so as to make listeners understand and by focussed listening, understand the subtleties of the speech delivered by others.
